Inspired by the book-loving man in Manila
We’ve heard about pop-up libraries and phone-booths that have turned into mini-book exchanges. But this story on the BBC today has to top it all: a man in Manila, Philippines, who turned his own home into a free public library.
It began as a simple concept: sharing his personal stash of books with his community, allowing the public to come and pick up anything they liked (at no cost) and return them when they liked (or not at all). But people began adding to his pile, bringing their own books for others to share and now, twelve years since he began this little project, his home-library is filled with well over 2000 books. Whilst providing his community with this wonderful service, he asks for nothing in return (living off his own savings), and now is encouraging others around the country to do the same.
A lovely story, an inspiring man, proof that the thirst for books is alive and well, and a reminder that they should be made available to everyone, everywhere.
