You can’t judge a book by its cover – especially if you’re a robot.
The robots are going to rise up and take our jobs, yes? Well no, maybe not. At least when it comes to book cover design.
I was looking through The Guardian‘s book section and came across an article about an algorithm created to predict a book’s genre by its cover. Designed by academics at Kyushu University in Japan, the algorithm uses visual clues from the cover to determine the genre – and so many of us know those tropes as well. A silhouette in a shady, creepy corridor or fluorescent typography against a dark background for crime fiction? How about the headless woman for historical or romantic fiction?
But what about the less obvious covers? Here are some great covers I think the algorithm may struggle to decipher.
Can you think of any more?
