Wednesday Cover Story: How do you illustrate a book about God?
Some book covers work because they are sumptuous, colourful and detailed. Others work because of their simplicity. And none more sothan this design which I came across yesterday.
So how do you illustrate a book about God? The answer is, you don’t.
I can’t think of a better design for a biography about God. Those three letters represent so much it doesn’t require an illustration. And it represents so many different things to different people – no image could be all-encompassing. Adding an image would immediately limit the scope of the word (probably reflect the author/designer/publisher’s view of God rather than invite the reader to interpret it as they want. Keeps it neutral. And I love the way the letters fall off the front, stressing the magnitude of that word, too big to be contrained by the boundaries of a book cover. A very nice touch.
