A lighter note on gender equality…
Gender equality remains a constant topic of discussion and debate. Last month the Insitute for Public Policy Research revealed that women still do more houswork than men, this week’s Stylist ran a feature on the gender gap including how women get paid less for the same job (Women: Is it time to strike?) and recently the Guardian posted a blog about how women end up paying more for services than men. Now with Season 5 of Mad Men back on our TV screens there is further media incentive to talk about whether or not things have really changed from the 50s/60s. But, as I thought about my approaching nuptuals and (more imminently) a weekend which calls for a bit of spring-cleaning, I couldn’t help but laugh when a friend sent me this advert from the 1950s…
I do think things have improved somewhat. (I would dare any husband to try that line with his wife today, and see what happens…) Yes, arguably sexism is still alive and well today, it’s just much less blatant, but it’s Friday and I’m not in the mood for polemic. If you can see the funny side to this advert, you can enjoy more of its kind here!
