Description

As a bustling crowd clambers aboard the Great Western Railway excursion train, taking them to an illegal prize-fight in Berkshire, the train guard fears for the safety of his rolling stock. Little does he expect, however, the brutal murder of one of his passengers, Jake Bransby. On the shocking discovery of the body, Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and his assistant, Sergeant Victor Leeming, are sent to the scene.

Faced with what initially appears to be a motiveless murder, Colbeck is intrigued by the murder weapon – a noose. When it emerges that Bransby has worked as a public executioner, he realises that this must be intrinsically linked to the killer`s choice of weapon. However, the further he delves into the case, the more mysterious it becomes. When a second man is strangled by a noose on a train, Colbeck knows that he must act quickly; can he catch the murderer before more lives are lost?

Set in Victorian England, The Excursion Train is written by the author of The Railway Detective. The memorable characters, first featured in the earlier novel, again lead you down unexpected paths in their quest to solve the mystery of the noose murders. Rich in historical detail, The Excursion Train will hold you captivated from the beginning to the end of its journey.

What The Critics Said

'Marston takes this important period in history and makes it his own'

reviewingtheevidence.com

‘Marston continues to produce historical crime writing of the first order, replete with authentic period detail, a vivid cast of characters, and a plot that makes for compulsive reading’

Good Book Guide

‘Told with great colour and panache…a wonderful sense of inhabiting the period. In Colbeck and Leeming Marston has created a fine pair… This is how history mysteries should be: fine storytelling, marvellous characters reminiscent of the great authors of the mid-Victorian period, and a sneaky mystery, too’

Sherlock Magazine

‘A good read’

The Railway Magazine

‘Well researched and excellently presented. A good read’

Philip Scowcroft

‘A well constructed tale of incest, revenge and locomotives’

Manchester Evening News

‘Charmingly written, thoroughly researched, and a most enjoyable follow up to the first in the series'

Historical Novels Review

‘His characters are lovable and there’s plenty of comic relief...Readers who board The Excursion Train will be in for a pleasant ride back in time and into the heart of an exciting mystery'

I love a mystery

'There’s a lot of period detail, and both the squalor of working class life and the excitement of the new technological age are well depicted...Colbeck is a sound and likeable character and his friends and colleagues complement him well'
