Cake: a fixed point in a crazy, mixed-up book world.
This summer has been oddly full of excitement and exertion of various kinds. We’ve win enough Olympic medals to fill a double scull, Fifty Shades of Grey has gotten the nation more than a little hot under the collar and there have been unconfirmed sightings of even myself at the gym.
But sanity does seem to be returning, slowly but surely: my evidence? The British public’s appetite for cake is reasserting its natural dominance over glory, salacious novels and Mo Farah‘s utterly disarming grins. The Hairy Bikers have tipped EL James off the Amazon’s top spot with their latest release The Hairy Dieters, perhaps only temporarily I admit, and Tuesday nights are prime time again with the return of Mary Berry and Paul ‘Silverback’ Hollywood in The Great British Bake Off.
Some things are never certain in life or even the book trade. I mean, who would have thought that we’d all be talking about erotica five months ago? But as we approach Christmas it’s reassuring to predict that a GBBO tie-in book will no doubt be exchanged between my mum and I. Rum Babba, anyone?
