I have to admit I wouldn’t have known it was Canada Day were it not for all the tweets about it. But considering I’ve often been mistaken for a Canadian because of my mid-Atlantic accent (which comes from growing up in Europe with an American mother) I am taking the opportunity to spread the cheer as a faux-compatriot.
Join me in wishing our Canadian author Susanna Kearsley a Happy Canada Day.  Or better still, buy one of her captivating books – Mariana , Sophia’s Secret or Every Secret Thing and spend the day utterly entranced. When you finally surface from reading the book, make yourself a big stack of pancakes with Grade A (nothing less) Canadian maple syrup and end the day watching ice-hockey on Setanta  – no wait, they just went bust – make that, Sky Sports. Enjoy the day!
