The legacy of Olga da Polga
One of my most memorable moments working for Allison & Busby was a lunch we had with Michael Bond, author of the Monsieur Pamplemousse crime series, but better-known as the creator of Paddington Bear. However, whilst his Paddington Bear fame would instill awe in any former child, the real thrill for me came when, through the conversation, I realised he was also the man behind that wonderful guinea pig, Olga Da Polga.
The memories came flashing back. And what wonderful memories they were! How I had loved those stories!
My delight was further amplified by the knowledge that the adventures of Olga da Polga were not entirely based on a fictitious creation. Michael actually had a pet guinea pig, and he still does today…no longer Olga, but Vladimir. And, in a recent letter to Susie, he shares, with his usual charm, proof of the latest exploits of his furry friend:
‘As you will see from the enclosed incriminating photographs, Vladimir has opted for a life of crime and has now gone into hiding!’
